Barban is a picturesque medieval acropolis-style village in Istria. It has a rich history and had many different rulers in the past: the Habsburgs, the Venetians, and the French. Many traces of its past can be found in cultural monuments and numerous interesting sites.

Well preserved buildings from the Baroque and Gothic periods, frescos and Glagolitic documents, four churches, palaces and town walls, as well as the Knights game “Trka na prstenac” make Barban an extremely attractive destination for all those who love cultural and historical heritage.

The Puntera and Barban surroundings have a long history. After the Histrians and Romans, it became a full Hapsburg possession before being taken over by the Republic of Venice in the 16th century. Part of the fortifications can still be seen today. In the churches of Saint Jakov and Saint Anton in Barban you can also find frescos with glagolitic writings, which describe the life of Istrian village people from when Barban was still a colony.

Nowadays, one of the most popular local traditions takes place on the third Sunday in August: Trka na prstenac, an annual tournament of horsemen. This medieval jousting game goes back to 1686 in Barban, but it is much older in origins and is celebrated in various forms in several medieval towns. The game was brought to Barban by the family of Loredan, who in that time wanted to attract as many people as possible. Today, this tradition draws tourists and spectators in great numbers in a lively and popular celebration.

In addition, every year Barban hosts a gathering of accordionists, a folklore festival, and a festival of figs and fig growers. Barban’s cultural heritage, history and attractions are worth seeing!
