El Borge is an authentic Andalusian white village with a small 1000 inhabitants, where time exactly stood still. Tourists are not part of the permanent street scene here. The village was founded by the Phoenicians in the fourth century BC and radiates an atmosphere of later Moorish rule. One of the two towers of the village church is built in the typical Mudejar style.
El Borge is 230 meters above sea level in the Axarquia, an area east of Malaga. It is a small, lively village with friendly and helpful residents who will make an effort to understand you even if you do not speak Spanish. There is a school, a music association, a flamenco school and a Pena de Verdiales where the children are taught the traditional music and dance type of the region, the Verdiales. There are some supermarkets, a bakery and butcher, a fish shop, a bird park, a gym and a spacious municipal swimming pool with a guarded toddlers' pool.
The beautiful swimming pool of El Borge, which is open from around mid-June to the beginning of September, is surrounded by a lawn with palm trees and the typical Spanish family restaurant of Pepe and Maria, which serves regional dishes. Besides the restaurant of Pepe and Maria, Tapabar Paco is a must, you can also eat here. The bar of Gema is located on the village square, with a terrace, tapas, sandwiches and ice cream. All restaurants in the village have free WIFI for guests. There is also a pub on the village square. There is a small market every Tuesday morning. The prohibition signs are even in heart shape ...
The well-known bandit Luis Munoz Garcia, better known as El Bizco de El Borge was born here in the 19th century, in his village there is a small museum Posada del Bandolero with a shadow terrace, a bar with tapas in his honor and a nice restaurant. The region knew more bandits and these were generally loved because the loot was shared with the villagers.
The La Axarquia region is surrounded by mountains that shield the area from in the winter the cold wind from the plateau of central Spain. This gives the region a beneficial micro climate in which even tropical fruits such as mango and avocados thrive. Almond trees are already blossoming in January. In the summer, this mountain range also prevents the hot air from the southern Spanish interior from entering the region unhindered.
A traditionally important source of income in El borge is the grape cultivation (moscatel), from which a wine, but above all delicious raisins are made. The grapes are drying on the hills around the village at the end of the summer. El Borge is large in raisins nationwide. This entire production process was declared World Heritage in 2018. One day a year, the 3rd Sunday of September, this town is the center of the region. On Dia de la Pasa, the day of raisin, the new harvest is presented and tried with a big party. There are many parties in El Borge during the year that often last all night.
From the amount of tropical fruit trees on the hills between El Borge and the neighboring village of Almáchar, which is 1.5 kilometers away, you can see that many winegrowers have already switched to growing avocados and mangos. The quality and taste of these fruits is better than the South American imports that are found in most northern European supermarkets.
You can walk to the beach in half an hour, you can shop in Malaga within 45 minutes and you can walk to Granada or Ronda within two hours. The village is a great home base during your explorations through the province of Andalusia in southern Spain.
