Barban is a picturesque medieval acropolis-style village in Istria. It has a rich history and had many different rulers in the past: the Habsburgs, the Venetians, and the French. Many traces of its past can be found in cultural monuments and numerous interesting sites.
Well preserved buildings from the Baroque and Gothic periods, frescos and Glagolitic documents, four churches, palaces and town walls, as well as the Knights game “Trka na prstenac” make Barban an extremely attractive destination for all those who love cultural and historical heritage.
The Puntera and Barban surroundings have a long history. After the Histrians and Romans, it became a full Hapsburg possession before being taken over by the Republic of Venice in the 16th century. Part of the fortifications can still be seen today. In the churches of Saint Jakov and Saint Anton in Barban you can also find frescos with glagolitic writings, which describe the life of Istrian village people from when Barban was still a colony.
Nowadays, one of the most popular local traditions takes place on the third Sunday in August: Trka na prstenac, an annual tournament of horsemen. This medieval jousting game goes back to 1686 in Barban, but it is much older in origins and is celebrated in various forms in several medieval towns. The game was brought to Barban by the family of Loredan, who in that time wanted to attract as many people as possible. Today, this tradition draws tourists and spectators in great numbers in a lively and popular celebration.
In addition, every year Barban hosts a gathering of accordionists, a folklore festival, and a festival of figs and fig growers. Barban’s cultural heritage, history and attractions are worth seeing!
Because of its excellent geographic position and short distance to the main Istrian towns, our guests have a lot of interesting possibilities for every season and every taste, from culture to sports. Along with great food, guests can enjoy gentle walks, hikes and horseback riding through Barban’s beautiful surroundings, as well as hunting in its many hunting grounds. If you want to admire one of the most stunning views, you should climb the highest top of Učka - the highest mountain in Istria.
You can also visit the Natural Park Rt Kamenjak, which is especially attractive for its numerous inlets, coves and beaches, as well as its fascinating underwater rich with fish, which makes it a wonderful place for fishing and diving. Needless to say, all those who enjoy trekking and mountain biking will enjoy themselves. Numerous walking paths in nature and along the sea will make your holiday memorable.
